Listed below are lesson plans developed by the Maryland Teachers of the Year award winners for the 2003-2004 school year.

A is For Action
Through a series of hands-on activities, first grade students will learn that the letter Aa has its own sound. They will be able to identify and produce its sound as well as write and recognize the letter Aa.

Adding Integers: A Tug of War
In this sixty minute lesson, seventh grade students will determine the rules for adding integers from -100 to 100 by using the internet as well as a hands-on game of math tug of war.

Around the World in A Day
Sixth grade social studies students will learn about the growth of civilizations in the ancient world through viewing a video and then a teacher led discussion which uses a 10' X 20' world map. The study of the ancient world is then linked to modern day...

Blubber is Better
Fifth grade science students test various materials to determine which material is the best insulator. This knowledge is linked to the study of polar bears and how they survive in their environment.

Breathtaking Bottle Model
Fifth grade science students will build a model of the human respiratory system using bottles, balloons, rubber gloves, and masking tape. Students will then compare the parts of the model to the actual human respiratory system.

Chomping Numbers
Kindergarten students will use the greater than < and the less than > symbols with numbers 1 through 20 in this forty minute math lesson. This lesson uses a variety of hands-on activities which help the students gain an understanding on these symbols.

Deno/Connotation Station
Seventh grade English students will study in depth the difference between connotation and denotation which will help increase student vocabulary.

Dude! Where's My News
Twelfth grade students will define news and entertainment and will properly classify articles found in newspapers from around the world.

Federal Investigation
Tenth grade students will study the Bush Administration while learning about the function of the various departments in the Federal Government.

Measurement Matters
First grade students will learn the importance of standard units of measurement in this literature based math lesson. Hands-on activities emphasis the knowledge of inches, feet, and yards.

Middle East in Miniature
Sixth grade social studies students will learn about the development of ancient Mesopotamia, its accomplishments, and how its accomplishments affect the world today, while creating a miniature display board.

Patterns on Parade
Through a series of hands-on activities, first grade students will learn to create simple, repeating, non-numeric patterns.

Portrait Poems
Eighth grade English students will create a portrait of someone special to them through the use of words. Through the study of figurative language, students will create this free verse portrait poem.

Ratio, Proportion, and Percent
Sixth grade students will review ratios, proportions, and percents during this sixty minute lesson by viewing a Web site on the Internet as well as playing "Jeopardy."

Rhythm is Gonna Get Ya: Line, Rhythm and Depth in Art
Sixth grade visual arts students will learn about dimension, line, depth, and narrative sequence through this five day lesson. Students will interpret various works of art as well as create their own landscape painting.

Roller Coasters
Third grade science students will learn about energy, motion, friction, and gravity, while designing and testing a student built roller coaster.

S For Scarecrows
Through a series of hands-on activities, Kindergarten students will review the letter Ss while learning about scarecrows and patterns.

Serious Laughter
Ninth grade students are introduced to the use of satire in literature during this ninety minute lesson. Students will examine political cartoons and essays in order to define satire, determine the tools of satire, as well the objects of satire.

Spectacular Squid
Third grade students will learn about the parts of a squid that helps it survive in its environment through a hands-on dissection.
