Child care professionals can earn MSDE Core of Knowledge clock hours from the comforts and convenience of any computer. Formats vary and learners progress through self-paced courses in easy-to-complete blocks of time or join facilitated online discussions with other child care professionals. Best of all, the courses are offered every month for a nominal fee. A statewide partnership between MSDE and MPT provides these interactive learning opportunities to early care educators.
Learners will become familiar with the functions and responsibilities of a Center Director, gain knowledge in program design, staffing, financial matters, program safety, COMAR state regulations, as well as admission and enrollment policies.

- Understanding Child Development (Family Child Care Pre-Service Course)
Learners will examine several theories of child development, developmental domains and milestones and how to apply these theories to support best practices in child care. Other course concepts include how children learn, Developmentally Appropriate Practices, the impact of culture and supporting children with special needs.

Course participants will examine the concept of curriculum development and learn about Developmentally Appropriate Practice and effective planning. Additionally, learners will gain knowledge and learn how to apply different curriculum development strategies to support best practices in child care.

Professionalism: Owning Your Own Business (Family Child Care Pre-Service Course)
Participants will learn how to write a business plan, develop appropriate policies and procedures, and how to support best practices in family child care. Additionally, learners will study appropriate supervision guidelines, COMAR regulations and effective communication strategies with parents.
