Physical Activity

It's important for kids to get lots of exercise as they grow up. Physical activity is a great outlet for all the energy bubbling inside them, and there are enormous long-term benefits. Not only does exercising regularly help build strong bodies, but it also fosters habits that can encourage your child to lead a healthy lifestyle when she grows up.

The key to becoming physically active is to find activities that both you and your kids will enjoy on a regular basis. There are countless activities that families can get involved in -- even some that you wouldn't normally think of as a workout. These include organized team sports as well as noncompetitive activities, like riding a bicycle or doing household chores. Even a good game of tag or a brisk walk around the neighborhood counts as physical activity.

Before you head out to join a league or get new gear, consider these points:

  • Get an idea of what your child's interests and strengths are by talking to her about what she likes to do. If you need help to decide what activities would be right for your child, take a look at Kidshealth.org. It categorizes physical activities by age level.
  • If the activity you've chosen doesn't rely on an already-established schedule, like a soccer league's game schedule, consider creating a routine that'll motivate your kids. An easy way to do this is to start at the same time each day- for instance, you could give up your family's least favorite half-hour of television in favor of exercise.
  • Flexibility is essential. Be willing to change activities to suit your kids' changing interests, as well as their need for a variety of physical experiences.
  • There are tremendous social benefits to participating in locally organized team sports. However, these competitive forms of exercise might not appeal to everyone. Before you join, also consider the impact of a team's scheduled practices and games (and possible travel requirements) on the entire family.
  • Once you've decided on a plan, stick to it. While any amount of physical activity is good for you, you'll notice real improvements when you get a workout on a regular basis.

Physical activity is something that everyone needs— even grownups. Exercising as a family will help both you and your kids stay in shape. Once you get into the swing of things, you'll find that it's tremendously fun, too.
