MPT Assembles Advance Team

MPT is working hard to assemble an advance team of teachers who will lead the way in using learning games in the classroom. And Diane Rymer is hard on the case.

MPTDiane, who serves as the assistant director of professional development at MPT, is recruiting 16 middle school math teachers who will be in on game development and the use of games in schools from the beginning of the project. The team members will be drawn from school districts who are participating in the project: Alleghany, Dorchester, Caroline, and Baltimore County Public Schools, and the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

These teachers will make a five-year commitment to the project, beginning with a seminar late this summer where the team will begin looking at the central question of LG2G: How can learning games help pre-algebra students master the skills they need to succeed?

By doing everything from playing paper mock-ups of the games being developed to studying the most effective ways to help other teachers use games, the advance team will be the voices of all math teachers who want to meet their students' needs with creativity and active learning.

As they complete this important work, Diane feels that advance team members will gain immensely from this project. "They have a unique opportunity to actually shape the resources their students use. It’s an exciting and intriguing process, and I think team members will be truly amazed to see this process unfold."

A former teacher with a Master of Arts in Instructional Technology, Diane is also aware how their involvement will enrich the team members' growth as professionals.

Diane is enthusiastic about beginning her work with the advance team. "In our jobs, we don’t often get to observe teachers putting into practice the materials we work so hard to develop. This time, we do."
