Media Specialist
Paint Branch High School
Montgomery County

"Technology is a great tool, and we can do great things using technology, but it is the human factor that makes the difference."

How did you get involved with the field of education?
I became interested in becoming a library media specialists after I graduated from undergraduate school. The country was in the middle of a recession and I had a hard time finding the kind of job and career I wanted. A librarian I knew spoke very highly of the graduate program at the University of Alabama and I decided to apply, and the rest is history. I am in a profession that I love.

Describe your current position?
I am a library media specialist at Paint Branch HS. I serve approximately 1800 students and 200 teachers and staff. We offer the standard college prep courses and numerous special academic programs for students. I oversee two computer labs and assist with the television studio and radio station. I provide computer and technology instruction to students, teachers, and parents, and am involved on a number of school committees and civic projects.

What role does technology play in your position?
Technology is playing a larger and large role in my position due to the advances in technology and the commitment of my school system to provide our students and teachers with the very best. Teachers and students are doing more and more using technology and as the media specialist I support them in several ways.

How has technology changed your education style / philosophy?
No, my style and philosophy are the same, but some of my methods have changed. I will always believe our greatest resources are each other. Technology is a great tool, and we can do great things using technology, but it is the human factor that makes the difference.

How can technology improve student achievement?
Technology can improve student achievement by providing students with a vehicle to enhance their skills and gain insight and information. Technology can also be used to express their creativity, and provide additional assistance when needed.

What tips or advice would you give to teachers about integrating technology into the classroom?
Technology does not replace great teachers or teaching, but enhances it. Do your best to receive as much training as possible and during that training ask how the technology be used to improve what you are already doing. Training should be interactive and so should instruction that students receive. Experiment, be creative, collaborate with others, learn from your students, and most of all learn and have fun.
