How did you get involved with the field of education?
Since I was a child, I have always wanted to be a teacher or librarian. I was the first person in my family to graduate from college and my parents were so proud that I was going into the teaching field. I got my under graduate degree in Social Studies and had a double minor in education and library. In library technology is a natural progression. I went to my first Internet training in 1985 on the text based magazine database dialog. We were so thrilled to be using our Apple IIe and our 1200 baud modem!
Describe your current position.
Currently I am ½ library and ½ technology liaison. I supervise the flexible computer labs and am in charge of insuring that all of the classroom computers are running smoothly. We have 330 computers in our building and 2 labs that are flexibly scheduled.
What role does technology play in your position?
Technology is an integral part of my library position. The lab that is attached to the library is constantly used and I am involved in planning and implement the lessons that take place there. As liaison it is my job to keep the computers up and running and to assist any teacher who wishes technology integrated into their lesson. I also do staff development to help my teachers learn new skills or improve skills they already possess.
How has technology changed your education style / philosophy?
Technology has allowed me to more flexible with my teaching. I can reach more students by making information more accessible.
How can technology improve student achievement?
Technology is often the “hook” for the kids who are just not interested. Even the most reluctant child can be drawn in when technology is integrated properly. Additionally students who have limitation can often be better accommodated using technology thereby “programming” them for success.
What tips or advice would you give to teachers about integrating technology into the classroom?
Anyone can use technology, even the most timid. Hand holding and extensive planning can bring almost anyone around and their successes will convert the masses.
