Gina teaches Academic Enrichment classes at Wilde Lake Middle, which, she explains, are intended to "address skill deficits our kids have in the areas of research, math, and technology." She covers a wide range of skills that span several subject areas - such as pre-algebra, basic research skills, and even basic word processing - employing an even wider array of technological resources to help her students.
She creates presentations with the LCD projector in her classroom, tracks individual student achievement, and even helps her students introduce themselves to each other, all using computer software. Gina's students build pages about themselves at the beginning of the year using a database. "They pick up technology skills in the process," she says, "and they're more likely to remember the information about each other."
On the benefits of easy access to technology:
"Just having daily access to the computers does wonders for the amount of time kids are on task, and that, in return, boosts their learning. Most of the technology-based work is produced by the kids. I don't just show it to them - they become proficient at it themselves."
