Margaret Brent (Windows Media)
Margaret Brent was the first woman in the English-speaking world to demand equality with men, by asking the General Assembly for the right to vote. She arrived in St. Mary’s County, Maryland in 1638 and became the first female landowner and taxpayer in the state. Brent’s story is one that resonates even today.
