Welcome to Thinkport’s Student Activity Center! Your teacher has directed you to this student activity to help you learn more about the topic you are studying.


Title: Above and Below Zero
Audience: Middle
Duration: 60 - 90 minutes

Student Directions:
In this activity, you will explore operations with integers using online manipulatives to model addition and subtraction with chips and a number line.  You will complete problems, write  number sentences, review the rules for each operation and solve problems involving operations with integers.  Finally, you will complete a review worksheet.  If you finish early, you will have an opportunity to solve a challenge problem online.



The Students will:

  • represent and apply addition and subtraction of positive and negative integers
  • compute the addition and subtraction of positive and negative integers using mental strategies and pencil/paper



Minimum of one computer with Internet access and a projection device

Directions: You will need paper and pencil to record your answers to the activities below. Please organize your paper by labeling each section with the Activity title. For example: Label the first section "Addition with Chips" and record your answers in that section. Don't forget to put your name on your paper!

Directions: On your writing paper, label this section Addition with Chips. Read the instructions explaining the problem that you are to work on. Drag chips into the work circle to represent the problem and click Continue. Drag plus chips on top of negative chips (zero sandwiches)or vice versa to cancel them out. When you drag a plus chip onto a negative chip they will animate and dissappear to represent cancelling each other out. Type in your answer (the number of chips left over with the appropriate sign) and click the Check button. A message will indicate if your answer is correct. If you are incorrect, try again. Complete at least 5 problems and record your final accurate equation for each on your paper.

Directions: On your writing paper, label this section Subtraction with Chips. Read the instructions explaining the problem that you are to work on. Drag chips into the work circle to represent the first term of the problem and click Continue. The instructions will update to tell you to drag enough +,- pairs into the work circle to allow you to later take away the needed number of chips. Follow the instructions and click Continue. The instructions will update to tell you to drag chips to the take away bin. Follow the instructions and click Continue. The instructions will update to tell you to cancel out as many positive and negative chip pairs as possible. Drag plus chips onto negative chips (zero sandwiches) or vice versa to cancel them out. Directions: On your writing paper, label this section Number Line Bounce. A number is displayed and instructions are given to place the displayed arcs in a sequence on the numberline to arrive at the specified number. Click and drag any of the arcs to the numberline. When you let go of the arc it will move so that its tail is positioned on zero. Repeat this process for each of the arcs shown. When you let go of an arc it will move so that its tail is positioned on the tip of the previous arc added to the number line. Subtract an arc by clicking on it and then clicking on the flip button. The selected arc will switch directions. Continue working with the arcs until all arcs are placed on the numberline and the tip of the last arc points to the number specified for the problem. When you have reached a correct solution a message will be displayed telling you that your answer is correct. Once you have accurately represented the solution, a new section of the screen will also appear requesting you describe your bounces by writing a number sentence. Record your number sentences for at least 5 of these activities.

Directions: Position the 14 numbers inside of the circles and intersections of circles in such a way that the three numbers in each of the circles sums (adds up) to zero. Work on the problem by clicking on and dragging numbers to locations inside circles or intersections of circles. When the three numbers in a circle add up to zero, the circle will change color.
