Teaching The Reader
With concern about early literacy at an all-time high in America, some of Maryland's best K-3 teachers display their classroom prowess in a fast-paced and fascinating new video series, called Teaching the Reader. Produced by Maryland Public Television for teacher training, this fourpart documentary-style series offers an in-depth look at the latest research and classroom techniques used successfully to teach reading. Through interviews and classroom performance, nine outstanding Maryland teachers share "what works" in the teaching of reading --preparing and implementing lessons, motivating young readers and evaluating their progress. Each program profiles one outstanding teacher. Other teachers, representing the diverse curricula and techniques used in Maryland, provide supporting views. State Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Nancy Grasmick, and noted educator, Dick Allington, author of "Classrooms That Work" and other books, also provide expert commentary throughout the series.
