Good study habits are an important part of any student's success. This doesn't just mean studying hard when a test is coming up - studying is a continuous process that helps learners collect their thoughts and reflect on all the new things they learn each day. It takes time and effort for your child to fully understand everything she's presented with in the classroom. Good study habits help your child to form that understanding effectively.
They also help to build your child's self-confidence as a learner. When your child is able to sort through new ideas and skills at home with ease, she'll feel ready for all the other new things she'll be learning in the classroom.
Here are some ways you can help foster good study habits in your child:
- Creating a steady routine is key. Once your child gets used to reviewing the material she's learned on a regular basis, it won't feel like a chore to her - and, more importantly, she'll examine what she's learning much more carefully.
- Give your child a comfortable place to study that's free from distractions. It might be a desk in her bedroom or the dining room table in the evening. The important thing is that your child can focus on what she's working on, and that she can get into a studying frame of mind when she sits down to work.
- Once a routine has been set, let your child take some responsibility for structuring her study time. You should still make sure that homework's getting done, but giving your child some freedom can help her grow as a student.
- Make sure that your child takes breaks while studying. According to the University of Illinois' Urban Extension program, first- and second-graders can only study productively for 15 minutes on average without a break. Third- and fourth-graders can usually last 20 minutes, and fifth- and sixth-graders about 30 minutes.
Remember, the study habits your child forms now will serve her for the rest of her life, through college and beyond.
