What is guided instruction?
• Guided instruction is a time for the teacher to provide a task for students to complete in groups. As the groups work together to complete the task, the teacher moves around the room, observing and monitoring each group.
• Guided instruction provides students with opportunities to respond to questions, prompts and cues as they learn the desired academic or social skill.
• Guided instruction is an opportunity for the teacher to assess where each student is and, if necessary, to meet each student’s learning needs based on a formative assessment.
• Guided instruction is based on the needs of the students during any given lesson.
• Guided instruction tasks are directly related to the content purpose, language purpose and social purpose of the lesson.
• Guided instruction is not a time to provide direct answers to questions posed by students who are struggling with the academic or social skill to be learned.
• Guided instruction is not a time for grouping students by ability.
