What is Podcasting?

Podcasting is a method of sharing audio (songs, interviews, talks, etc.) over the Internet.  It’s a created word that combines the “pod” from Apple’s iPod (a very popular device for listening to podcasts) and the “casting” broadcasting.  They are usually a continuing series, with new episodes offered regularly.

Podcasts are digital files (like MP3s) that broadcast over the Internet.  You can download an individual podcast and listen to it on your computer.  You can also subscribe to the podcast, or get the most recent episode by subscribing to the podcast.

How do I subscribe to a Podcast?

To subscribe to a podcast, you need a podcasting software. One example is iTunes, a free software. For other options, check out the list of podcast software at PodcastingNews.com.

  1. If you don’t already have podcast software installed on your computer, download the program that will work with the products you use to listen to podcasts (MP3 players, iPods etc.)  .
  2. Subscribe to the podcast.

Copy the address (URL) for the podcast into your podcast program. For example, to subscribe to a podcast in iTunes, click "Advanced" in the upper left hand corner of the first screen you see, and then click "Subscribe to Podcast".  Paste the URL into the box, and you are subscribed! As new shows for your subscription become available, your software will automatically download it.
