Dr. Jane Pruitt

Principal
Supervisor of Career & Technology Education
Worcester Career & Technology Center
Worcester County
"My philosophy of education has always included a perception that education is change – change in individuals, change in communities, and change in institutions – and that progress is change for the better."

How did you get involved with the field of education?
In the 1970s, the state of Maryland waived tuition to education majors who committed to teaching for at least two years in the public schools system after graduation from the university system. My career began in Somerset County, Maryland in 1976.

Describe your current position?
Describe your current position. Currently, I am the principal of the Worcester Career and Technology Center and the supervisor of career and technology education for the district.

What role does technology play in your position?
What role does technology play in your position? In my position(s) technology plays a key role in student achievement. The use of technology is integrated in all subject areas to prepare students to the meet the standards expected in all aspects of industry, to ensure a competitive edge in post secondary education, as well as to encourage the acquisition of personal knowledge and skills. Technology is used by teachers to enhance learning in the classroom by modeling the use of effective and efficient use of technology tools to access, evaluate, process, and communicate information. In the whole school community, technology is used to access, store, analyze, and report student academic progress.

How has technology changed your education style / philosophy?
My philosophy of education has always included a perception that education is change – change in individuals, change in communities, and change in institutions – and that progress is change for the better. The infusion of technology into the everyday lives of all Americans and the rapid change of technology has become a constant. In order to ensure that this change is not just positive but also equitable, school planners must embrace technology and become leaders in technology through advocacy and empowerment. Anything less will be a disservice to the future of the children and youth of our society.
