• Do state out loud and post in the classroom the three purposes – the content purpose, the language purpose and the social purpose -- of the lesson using “I can” statements.
• Do demonstrate your thinking by using “think-aloud” statements.
• Do model the academic and social skills that you would like students to ultimately exhibit.
• Do place students in pairs after you model the desired academic or social behavior and allow the students to summarize what was learned.
• Don’t take longer than 15 minutes to present the lesson.
• Don’t use this period to tap into or assess students’ prior knowledge.
