Practical Application of ELA Methods (Primary) K-2

Description: This online course is designed to assist teachers in re-examining and revising lessons through the lens of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). In this course, you will explore the standards in the PreK through 2 grade band. You will learn how the MCCRS scaffold the skills students need to be successful readers, speakers, and writers across elementary primary ELA instruction, and you will see connections among those standards and the literary selections typically taught in Grades PreK, K, 1 and 2.

Early Talent Development
Dates: October 9—December 10

Description: This course familiarizes educators with the characteristics and needs of young gifted students with the goal of recognizing and documenting early evidence of advanced learning behaviors, particularly in historically underrepresented student groups. Early childhood educators will be introduced to strategies for challenging every child and nurturing students' potential for higher-level thinking, creativity, and problem-solving. The course is aligned with the Maryland State Department of Education's Primary Talent Development Early Learning Program, PreK-2.

CFIP—Supporting Data Dialogue in the Classroom through the Classroom-Focused Improvement Process (Advanced)
Dates: September 25—December 17

Description: This course is an introduction to the Classroom-Focused Improvement Process (CFIP) and is recommended for school-based educators. CFIP is a school-based data analysis process that empowers teachers to make data-based decisions that will increase student learning. Course outcomes focus on understanding the underpinnings of the protocol, the steps in the process, and implementation insights. Instructional materials include analysis of current school data processes, completed CFIP templates, and embedded videos of Maryland educators using and commenting on the CFIP process.

Digital Portfolios for Enhancing Learning
Dates: October 9—December 10

Description: This course is designed to provide K-12 educators with an in-depth understanding of how to develop e-Portfolios while building content knowledge and exemplifying best practices in education. Participants will be required to evaluate and select digital portfolio tools that can be used in their school and to create a student digital portfolio action plan to be implemented in their class. Participants will also develop a strategy for the creation of a teacher digital portfolio to document growth in education.

Fraction Fundamentals: Part B
Dates: October 9—December 10

Description: This online course will continue to build upon the foundational concepts of fractions that were introduced and examined in Fraction Fundamentals: Part A. Participants will begin by examining and discussing a model comparing fractions and reasoning with fractions applicable to grades 3-5. Following these initial lessons, the remainder of the course will focus on fraction operations. In addition to written assignments, discussion posts, and readings, participants will complete a final project that reflects all course activities. Completion of Fraction Fundamentals: Part A is required.

Online Teaching in Maryland (OTM)

Description: This updated online course prepares participants to facilitate online courses for students and other educators. Readings, hands-on activities, asynchronous and synchronous discussions,role-playing activities, and other activities support learning the pedagogy behind successful online learning, teaching, and assessment. Practice in the course’s “Sandbox” helps participants apply their knowledge and utilize the course features of the Learning Management System.
Prerequisite: It is recommended that participants have had at least one online experience.

Current Best Practices in School Library Media: A Book Study
Dates: October 9—November 12

Description: The 2017 National School Library Standards detail practices to empower School Library Media Specialists to transform teaching and learning. These standards are the basis for the new Maryland School Library Media Standards for Learners, Librarians, and Libraries. They enable school librarians to influence and lead in their schools, districts, and the state and to develop plans that meet today’s educational landscape for learners, school librarians, and school libraries. Research shows that effective school libraries, led by certificated school librarians, have a positive impact on student learning, reading and achievement.

This book study is designed to guide participants in an in-depth investigation of current best practices in School Library Media services. Participants will read, discuss, and journal to gain familiarity with ways in which these standards support teaching and learning through the profession and in the school library.
